The cover changes everything — especially here
There are two cover materials that define almost every golf ball on the market: urethane and ionomer. The difference between them isn't academic. It's the difference between a chip that checks and holds versus a chip that skips cheerfully past the flag and into trouble behind the green.
Urethane is a soft polymer that grips the grooves of the clubface at impact, generating friction, generating spin, and giving you the stopping power that makes the short game feel like an art form. Ionomer is harder, more durable, and significantly cheaper to produce. It generates less friction, less spin, and a ball that runs rather than checks on landing.

Urethane vs ionomer — stripped of the marketing
How big is the gap? It depends on the test, and honesty matters here. Golf Digest's 2021 Hot List analysis, robot-tested on a Foresight launch monitor, put urethane at close to 70% more spin than non-urethane on a half-wedge. Golf Digest's own more recent robot testing, in 2024, measured the advantage at a more conservative 30 to 50%. Either way, the direction is consistent and proven across years of independent robot data: urethane covers generate materially more greenside spin. The exact percentage moves with the test; the conclusion does not.
MyGolfSpy's 2025 independent robot test sharpened the picture. On a 35-yard wedge shot, the spread between the highest and lowest spinning balls reached nearly 4,000rpm — and not a single ionomer ball in the test generated competitive greenside spin. That is a performance gap no amount of short-game practice can fully bridge if the ball itself isn't built to check.
The honest trade-off nobody mentions
Neither cover is always superior. Ionomer balls generally produce lower spin off the driver — genuinely useful if you fight a severe slice, because less spin means less curvature. But that same ball around the green won't check, won't hold a tight lie, and won't give you the feel a delicate chip demands. The cover that helps you off the tee can hurt you where you play the most shots.
Conversely, a urethane-covered ball gives you spin, feel and control inside 50 yards — the ability to flight a wedge low and still stop it. The trade-off is cost and, for some swings, marginally more spin off the driver. The cover is not just a material. It's a statement about where your game needs the most help.
