The kernel of truth — and where it ends

Low-compression golf balls do compress more easily at slower swing speeds, and they tend to feel softer. That part is accurate, and for some slower-swinging golfers a softer ball can offer marginally better feel and a slightly higher launch. That is a real, if modest, benefit.

But "soft" has been oversold. Modern premium balls are engineered to perform across a wide range of swing speeds — robot testing repeatedly shows firmer tour-construction balls performing well even at moderate speeds, not "failing to activate." The more important point is what compression and cover do to spin, because that's where ball choice quietly costs strokes — and it's not just a driver question.

Compression isn't the whole story — spin is

Here's the part the "just play soft" advice skips: many soft, low-compression balls also use ionomer covers, and that combination produces low greenside spin. MyGolfSpy's 2025 robot testing found a spread of nearly 4,000rpm between the highest and lowest spinning balls on a 35-yard wedge shot — and the lowest performers were almost entirely soft, ionomer-covered models. That's the difference between a ball that checks and one that releases well past the flag.

Note the nuance, because it matters: compression and spin are not the same lever. Some lower-compression balls still spin respectably; some firmer ones don't. "Soft equals low spin everywhere" is too crude to be true. The honest takeaway is narrower — a soft ionomer distance ball typically gives up greenside control, and for a golfer who plays most of their shots inside 100 yards, that trade-off deserves real thought before the next dozen is bought.

The right question to ask instead

Rather than "should I play a soft ball?", the more useful question is: where am I actually losing strokes? If the answer is curvature and distance off the tee, a lower-spin ball matched to your speed may help. If the answer is short-game control — the far more common culprit — a soft, low-spin distance ball may be actively making things worse.

The compression myth persists because it contains a kernel of truth and it's easy to repeat. But the right ball for your game isn't the softest one available. It's the one that performs correctly across all 18 holes — not just the ones where you're hitting driver.
