Shorter clubs lose slightly less in absolute terms but a similar percentage.
For a UK golfer, the practical temperature range across the year is significant. A mild July afternoon might be 22°C (72°F). A February morning in most of England is 5°C (41°F). That is a 31°F gap, which translates — using the published Titleist figure of 1.5% per 20°F — to approximately 4.5% distance loss across the bag.

The approach shot is where scores suffer most
Driver distance loss in winter is annoying. But it is approach shots where temperature genuinely costs you shots. A golfer who hits their 7-iron 150 yards in summer and treats it as their 150-yard club in February will routinely be short of the green. Short means chip. Chip means putt. The yardage difference compounds directly into dropped shots.
The adjustment is straightforward: take one more club in cold conditions. Not because your swing has changed. Because the physics of the ball have. A 7-iron in February is doing the job your 8-iron does in July. Recognising that is a free stroke saved.
The ball matters too
Temperature does not affect all balls equally. High-compression balls — those above 90 on the compression scale — are more sensitive to cold. At low temperatures, a ball that is already firm becomes firmer still, and the energy transfer at impact suffers more noticeably. Lower-compression balls, by contrast, have more resilience at cold temperatures because there is more elasticity in the core to begin with.
A golfer playing the same premium high-compression ball year-round is making a decision that works reasonably well in summer and works against them in winter. The ball that suits their swing speed in warm conditions may not be the ball that performs best in cold ones. This is not a manufacturer's fault — it is simply the physics of rubber compounds in cold air. It is, however, something very few golfers are ever told.
One adjustment you can make today
Keep a spare ball in your trouser pocket during winter rounds. Rotate it in on alternate holes. A ball at body temperature performs measurably better than one that has been sitting in a cold bag since the first tee. Titleist themselves recommend this. It costs nothing, requires no swing change, and recovers a yard or two that cold air is quietly taking from you.
