At 65 mph of club speed, MyGolfSpy reports that urethane averaged less than 100 rpm more mid-iron spin than ionomer across the whole field — a difference small enough to be functionally irrelevant to ball flight. Off a wedge, the same comparison opens up to more than 1,200 rpm. The conclusion the data supports is narrow and worth stating plainly: at that speed, cover material decides greenside spin and does close to nothing on a full iron shot. That reframes the usual premium-versus-value argument. If a slower swinger is paying up for a urethane cover, the return arrives in the last 40 yards, not in the approach.

Spin costs distance when there isn't speed to carry it
The 65 mph distance table runs against the marketing. MyGolfSpy found the ten highest-spinning balls averaged 34th of 48 for total distance, while the ten lowest-spinning averaged 15th. Only four of the top ten longest at that speed were high-compression models, and the longest of the lot was one of the softer balls in the field. Balls that spin above average — including models from Callaway, Vice and Bridgestone — populated the short end. The mechanism is unglamorous: at 65 mph there isn't enough ball speed to convert spin into carry, so spin becomes a tax rather than a tool. Testing ran over 80 hours across three Scottsdale-area venues using Golf Labs robots outdoors and an ADC swing robot indoors for wedge work, with wind averaging below five mph — conditions tight enough that these gaps are signal, not weather.
What this means for a fitting
This is the argument for fitting rather than shopping, made with someone else's robot. Two balls that a marketing page would file under the same heading can finish 20 places apart in a distance table for a golfer swinging 65 mph, and the cover that justifies the price tag may only pay out on shots inside 40 yards.
