TaylorMade's Hi-Toe 5 Lands With Five Grinds, 50° to 60°, and No Independent Spin Data

The grind chart is the real fitting decision here — and the ball in your pocket still sets the spin ceiling.

TaylorMade has brought back its Hi-Toe wedge line as the Hi-Toe 5, forged from soft carbon steel with full-face saw-milled grooves, five sole grinds, two finishes and lofts from 50° to 60°, per launch information published by Plugged In Golf on 13 August 2026. Every performance claim attached to it is currently the manufacturer's own, because no independent testing has been published.

What was actually announced

The specification is clear enough: soft carbon steel forgings, a full face of new, more aggressive saw-milled grooves, five grinds badged ATS, ATV, ATW, ATX and ATC, two finishes, and a loft range running from 50° to 60°. What the launch does not include is data. The line about being able to "spin it from anywhere" is marketing copy, not a measured result, and until a robot test or a controlled player test appears it should be read that way. That is not a criticism of the wedge, which may well be excellent. It is a note on what we can honestly say about it today.

Five grinds is a fitting problem, not a feature list

The grinds are meaningfully different from one another. Per the launch details, the ATW has the widest sole and high effective bounce for soft sand and soft turf; the ATC is the lowest-bounce option, with a narrow split sole for tight lies; the ATV uses a concave sole and asymmetric bounce that plays mid-high square and lower with the face open; the ATS adds four-way camber as the all-round choice; and the ATX runs a wider mid-bounce sole with three ledges for stability.

That spread only helps if you pick correctly. A wide-sole, high-bounce wedge on firm turf with a shallow attack angle is a worse purchase than a cheaper wedge in the right grind, and no amount of groove engineering rescues it. If you are buying, hit them on the turf you actually play, not on a mat.

The wedge is half the equation — the ball is the other half

Grooves and grind govern turf interaction and the friction available at impact. The cover decides how much of that friction becomes spin, particularly on partial shots into a green. Today's Golfer's robot testing, summarised on its equipment news hub in August 2026, found that several inexpensive balls matched the spin and stopping power of the game's most expensive models, which tells you the spin ceiling is not always where the price tag suggests.
