Speed leaves quietly
Nobody wakes up five miles an hour slower. That is the difficulty. Loss of clubhead speed with age is gradual, uneven and easy to explain away — a cold morning, a stiff back, a new set of irons that must be a degree weaker. It arrives as a slightly longer club into greens and a driver that used to carry the bunker and now finds it.
The consensus among fitters and coaches is straightforward: speed tends to decline over the years, and the ball should be matched to the speed you have rather than the speed you had. We are not going to put a figure on the rate, because any figure would be an approximation dressed up as a measurement. The direction is what matters, and the direction is consistent.
What the wrong ball actually costs
A golf ball is a spring. It only returns energy if it is compressed properly, and compression comes from speed. When a swing no longer delivers enough of it, a firm, tour-level ball is simply not being asked the question it was built to answer. You feel it as a dead strike off a good hit.
The symptoms are dull rather than dramatic. Slightly lower ball speed. A flatter flight that runs out of legs. Iron shots that land shorter than they used to and stop less than you expected. None of it looks like a ball problem from inside the round. It looks like getting older.
Why the old fitting expires
If you were fitted for a ball at some point, that fitting was a photograph, not a contract. It described the golfer standing there on that day. A fitting from eight or ten years ago is describing somebody else.
This is the part most golfers miss. Equipment gets replaced on a cycle — new driver, new shaft, new grips — but the ball, the one piece of kit used on every single shot, gets bought on habit. We have argued elsewhere in this series that the ball is the cheapest place to find strokes. It is also the easiest place to leave them lying about for a decade without noticing.
Softer is not the whole answer
The instinct, once speed drops, is to reach for whatever box has the word soft on it. That instinct is roughly half right and it can cost you around the green.
Compression is one variable. Cover material is another, and it governs what happens on the shots inside a hundred yards where senior golfers often score best. A low-compression core with an ionomer cover behaves very differently from a low-compression core with a urethane one. Matching your speed does not mean surrendering short-game spin, and plenty of golfers over-correct into a ball that flies acceptably and then refuses to stop.
Check the ball, not the calendar
