The part that gets measured and the part that does not
Everyone accepts that dehydration costs physical output. It is intuitive: less fluid, less blood volume, more effort for the same work, a slower and shorter swing by the closing holes. That much is easy to believe because you can feel it happening.
The cognitive side is quieter and rather more expensive. Wittbrodt and Millard-Stafford published a meta-analysis in 2018 pulling together the available studies on fluid loss and mental performance. Their finding was that once dehydration passes roughly two percent of body mass, cognitive performance is measurably impaired — attention, coordination and executive function among the affected domains.
That two percent figure is a threshold drawn from pooled research, not a line painted on your body. Treat it as an approximation. The useful point is that the threshold is low, and reachable inside a single warm round without you noticing you have crossed it.
What impaired judgement looks like on a golf course
Golf does not test cognition with a keyboard task. It tests it with a decision every few minutes, most of them made while slightly tired, slightly warm and slightly annoyed.
A dehydrated brain does not forget how to swing. It gets sloppy about the things around the swing. It takes the number off the rangefinder and stops thinking. It reaches for the club that would work if struck perfectly. It aims at the flag because the flag is the obvious thing to aim at. It stops doing the small arithmetic on a layup versus a carry, because the arithmetic feels like effort.

Why the back nine takes the damage
Fluid loss accumulates. You start the round even, or slightly down if you had coffee and nothing else, and the deficit builds hole by hole while you do nothing about it. The result is that your worst thinking arrives at the point in the round where the score is still live.
There is a nasty overlap here. The back nine is also where fatigue, heat and scoreboard pressure land. All three point the same way — towards the impulsive option, the one that requires no calculation. So the collapse looks like nerve or stamina, and gets filed under those, when part of it is chemistry.
It also explains why the damage rarely shows up as one catastrophic hole. It shows up as three or four ordinary bogeys that each began with a slightly poor choice.
Drinking before you are thirsty
Thirst is a lagging indicator. By the time you want water, you have already lost some of the ground. So the practical answer is scheduled rather than reactive: drink to a plan, not to a feeling.
A bottle in the bag, a few mouthfuls every two or three holes, and a deliberate refill at the turn will cover most club golfers on most days. Warm weather, a long walk or a heavy carry bag mean more. Alcohol and caffeine at the halfway hut mean more again. None of this needs measuring or a spreadsheet; it needs the habit of drinking on holes where you feel completely fine.
It is also worth eating something. Not because this post is about food, but because a low-fuel, low-fluid golfer makes the same category of bad decision, and the two arrive together.
The cheapest gain available
Most marginal gains in golf cost something. A fitting costs money. Practising the right shots costs time you would rather spend hitting drivers. Sleep, which we have covered separately, costs a rearranged evening.
Hydration costs a bottle of water and the discipline to drink it before you want to. That is the whole intervention. It will not add yards to your best drive of the day and it will never feel like progress while you are doing it.
What it protects is the quality of your thinking on the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth. Given that is where a lot of scores are decided, it is an odd thing to leave to chance.
