The compound effect most golfers never reach for

Choosing the right ball is the easiest marginal gain most club golfers have never claimed. But if we're applying the aggregation of marginal gains philosophy properly, stopping at ball choice leaves most of the gains on the table. Golf invites this kind of thinking across every decision made before, during and between shots — and most of those decisions get made by habit, not intelligence.

Brailsford's principle, in his own words, was that if you broke down everything that goes into the performance and improved each part by around 1%, the combined effect would be significant. The cycling programme applied it from the obvious — training and nutrition — to the genuinely small: the right pillow taken to every hotel, hand-washing technique to avoid losing days to illness. The lesson isn't the pillow. It's the systematic refusal to ignore any controllable variable.

Three free marginal gains available right now

Consider the pre-shot routine. Sport-psychology research consistently associates a consistent pre-shot routine — a deliberate trigger, a breath, a focused look at the target — with more stable performance under pressure. The exact physiological mechanism is debated, but the behavioural effect is well supported, and it costs nothing and requires no physical ability.

Consider hydration. A meta-analysis of 33 studies found that dehydration measurably impairs cognitive performance — particularly attention, executive function and coordination — once water deficit exceeds about 2% of body mass. Over a four-hour round in warm conditions, an under-hydrated golfer is plausibly not making the same quality of decisions late in the round as early. Carrying water and drinking consistently is, genuinely, a marginal gain worth claiming.

Consider club selection honesty. Real on-course tracking data consistently shows amateur golfers overestimate their carry distance with almost every club. A golfer who routinely takes genuinely enough club — not the aspirational one — hits more greens, leaves shorter putts, and makes fewer doubles. That gain compounds across every approach, every round, every season.

None of this is complicated

It just requires applying the same intelligence to every decision that most golfers apply to none of them. The ball was the first decision. Make the rest with the same rigour, and the compound effect accumulates across 18 holes.
